A Choice: The International Baccalaureate Diploma or the BC Dogwood

Dwight is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and the only boarding school in Western Canada to offer both the IB and provincial curriculum

Our students have a choice to follow the BC High School curriculum or the International Baccalaureate. Successful completion of the requirements for either option enables graduates with the requirements for entrance to university.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is one of the world's most respected pre-university courses of study. The IB Diploma provides graduating seniors with multiple tools to approach study in college and beyond. The IB Diploma gives students a global perspective, ensuring that they will be ready to enter the world’s marketplace with a respect for and understanding of other cultures.

The powerful components of the IB Program include concurrent learning across six subject areas and consistent, high academic standards. The Program requires of all students good study habits, an open mind, and an ability to plan ahead.

While all Dwight students can earn International Baccalaureate certificates in selected subjects, today over eighty percent of the senior class take the full Diploma Program. International students are encouraged to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Recent IB Diploma graduates have:

  • Often earned between half a year and a full year of college credit for their IB exam scores
  • Averaged 600 on the verbal SAT and 605 on the Math SAT
  • Been accepted to over 200 national and international colleges and universities and attended over 60 top-tier schools including Princeton, Harvard, Duke, The Julliard School, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, NYU, Brown, Cornell, Yale, Dartmouth, and Oxford University. Click here for a full list of Dwight College acceptances from 2002-2008.
  • Graduated Valedictorian at McGill in 2005

The IB Advantage

Colleges and universities recognize the Diploma Program as superior preparation, and all Diploma Program courses are viewed as Honors courses. Students routinely receive advanced placement and/or college credit for their examination results. Students not taking the full IB Diploma may still take up the challenge of individual IB courses and be eligible for college credit.

In fact, many universities prefer students who have taken the IB and most universities give varying amounts of first year university credit to students who have completed the IB diploma. In addition to granting first year credit, many universities also offer scholarships for recipients of the IB diploma (for a list of these universities click here)

The IB maintains a directory of universities that take IB diploma graduates. Currently there are 2545 universities from 75 countries in the directory, but many other universities also admit IB Diploma holders. Please always check with the university directory.

The IB method is a powerful interactive learning process that brings the dynamic realities of into the classroom.

Boarding Option: Dwight International School

Dwight International School offers 5 and 7 day boarding programs for both local and international students. Our professional parent plan is an attractive option for local (the Islands and lower mainland) students who wish to stay in residence during the week and go home on the weekend.) This allows students to benefit from evening study hall and have increased access to Dwight faculty in the evening.
